Our total research expenditures continue to climb, and ASU is ranked highly for many key disciplines in the National Science Foundation’s latest Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) survey.
In fiscal year 2016, the latest year available, ASU ranked:
- $546.5 million in total research expenditures
- $1.9 billion in proposal submissions
- $400 million in new award obligations
ASU is consistently ranked among top U.S. research programs for research expenditures across disciplines in the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development survey:
No. 1 for anthropology, ahead of Harvard, Stanford and the University of Michigan
No. 9 for total research expenditures among institutions without a medical school, ahead of Caltech, Princeton and Carnegie Mellon
No. 2 for geological and earth sciences, ahead of MIT, Stanford and Penn State
No. 4 for social sciences, ahead of Berkeley, Cornell, UCLA and Penn State
No. 4 for humanities, ahead of Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Columbia
No. 4 for transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and other sciences, ahead of MIT and Carnegie Mellon
No. 5 for political science, ahead of Berkeley, Penn State and Duke
No. 7 for electrical engineering, ahead of Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and MIT
No. 9 for U.S. Department of Health and Human Services-funded expenditures among institutions without a medical school, ahead of Princeton, Georgia Tech and Carnegie Mellon
