MESSAGE FROM
PRESIDENT MICHAEL M. CROW

I am pleased to share Arizona State University’s FY 2017 achievements and impacts in research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

At ASU, we are boldly tackling the complex challenges of society today – from cybersecurity and early disease detection to next-generation infrastructure and sustainable agriculture – and creating solutions that resound globally.

This year we exceeded $546 million in research expenditures and continue to be one of the fastest growing research enterprises in the U.S. This year our research achievements include identifying clues for reversing the effects of Alzheimer’s, developing new methods for the early detection of pancreatic cancer and partnering to bring clean water to the Middle East. Also, ASU’s Nexus Lab for Digital Humanities and Computational Informatics was chosen as an institutional partner to lead the world’s first and oldest academic social network – the Humanities, Arts, Science and Technology Alliance and Collaboratory.

Our students are immersed in an ecosystem of discovery and innovation, where they work alongside outstanding faculty in creating new knowledge. As a result, ASU develops lifelong learners who are empowered to pursue careers in all fields – even ones that don’t yet exist. ASU has been ranked among the top 10 universities for graduate employability, ahead of MIT and Columbia, and we are a top producer of faculty and student Fulbright scholars, ahead of Cornell and the University of Texas at Austin.

For an unprecedented third straight year, ASU was named the most innovative school in the country by U.S. News & World Report. Reflecting this innovative spirit, an ASU team created a satellite that fits in the palm of your hand, which received Popular Mechanics’ 2016 Breakthrough Award in the space category. ASU is adept at bringing new inventions to market, ranking No. 21 out of more than 200 U.S. research institutions, ahead of Harvard and Johns Hopkins University, and No. 6 among institutions without a medical school in the latest Milken Institute tech transfer rankings.

Each year ASU accelerates the growth of knowledge, technologies and solutions and this update shares many examples that illustrate the impact of our knowledge enterprise.
